Tohoku

4 days/3 night Mini-Itinerary

Tohoku a region in the northern part of Japan’s Honshu Island is know for it’s beautiful country side and scenery. It is known for volcanoes, mountains, and amazing winter sports. Matsushima Bay which is one of Japan’s most scenic spots in Japan and lake Tawada, a huge crater lake renowned for its bright-blue color and surrounding forests. This mini-itinerary does not even begin to touch what Tohoku has to hold. Tohoku also has big cities, it’s biggest being Sendai, with the site of Osaki Hachimangu Shrine and ornate Zuihoden (the tomb of the feudal lord Date Matsamune).

Day 1

  • start in Tokyo
  • take a scenic train ride along the coast
  • Depart Train at Tsuruoka Station

Accommodation: you will be staying the night at a carefully selected hotel to meet your travel style and budget
Meal: Dinner

Day 2

  • Check-out this morning
  • Meet your Private Hire Car out front or in Lobby (in the agreed-upon spot)
  • the first, stop at Mt. Haguro-San (Mt. of Rebirth)
  • You will meet your temple guide at the front entrance of the sanctuary.
  • After visiting the Five-Storied Pagoda and the Oldest Cedar Tree in Tohoku, you will be driven around to the back of the “east depths” of the temple and see the Dewa Shrines of Mt. Haguro.
  • For lunch you will be having lunch at one of the most renowned restaurants in the Tohoku region – Al-Ché-cciano which is a Michelin star restaurant
  • After lunch you will head to the Mogami River for A Boat ride on the Mogami River
  • Enjoy a lovely ride down the Mogami River
  • Enjoy an authentic snack with sake or beer on the boat
  • After the Boat ride, you will head to Sendai which is Tohoku’s largest city
  • After checking into the hotel you have two choices for dinner
    • dinner at the hotel
    • strolling the Bunka Yokcocho/Iroha Yokocho for a local bar hopping experience, this area is the only area that was not bombed in WWII

Day 3

  • Check out of your hotel in the morning and before leaving for Matsushima you will be going to view the Sendai Castle Ruins which has the iconic statue of the feudal lord Masumune Date
    • the castle is no longer standing
  • After the Castle you will be driving to Matsushima
    • which is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan
  • Start with a walk around the Temple of Entsuin Temple
    • if you are visiting during the fall this can be optional as you will be viewing the Evening Fall Colors Event this evening.
    • You can also choose to view Zuiganji Temple it is considered Matsushima’s most important temple
  • Enjoy some local shopping as you walk around town
  • Enjoy at a cup of Tea at Kanrantei Tea House which is a historical spot and has a wonderful view of Matsushima Bay.
  • A boat ride around the Matsushima islands
  • A walk across the red bridge to one of the Islands – this is rumored to tell you who your true love is on the other side
  • If staying at a Ryokan be sure to enjoy your evening with an Onsen bath and a Kaiseki Dinner.

Day 4

  • This morning  check out of your Hotel
  • Leave your bags with the Concierge staff as you will have a little time to enjoy the town if you missed any shopping you wanted to get in before you head back to Tokyo.
  • Head back to your hotel to retrieve your belongings and take a taxi ride to Matsushima train station
  • You will be taking the Shinkansen train back to Tokyo
    • the Tohoku Line with a transfer at Sendai station to Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen
